It's All in the Details

There is nothing like a birthday party with 40+ people attending to get you in gear in the garden.  I've had these tasks lingering on the back burner and am thrilled to finally have them finished!

This wind chime has been missing the wooden piece that makes it sing for quite a while...it has new life now with a ceramic snowflake that I made a few Christmas' ago to decorate packages.  It's repair is just in time for the fall breezes.

A few years ago I was visiting a friend's garden and she had a collection of bird houses nailed to her fence.  I loved the idea and immediately went out and got a few bird houses...

but I never seemed to be quite happy with their arrangement, until today!

They were scattered around the backyard looking somewhat lost but now look lovely grouped together on this trellis.  After years of drifting, they've found the perfect home.  I'll add a couple more to finish this up.

These little birds were a find at Round Top recently.  They were originally orange clay so I added some glaze to raw umber paint to age them a bit.  Now they have a nice patina and sit expectantly on the ledge under the bird houses.

Beautiful autumn light enhances the colors of the garden making it impossible to ignore.

Now the really hard part begins...staining the arbor!

  1. I think your idea for the bird houses is super. It does seem to make a difference by grouping similar objects together - they don't seem quite so lost.

  3. No, no birds as of yet. I thought a tit mouse was going to move in earlier this year but no luck!

  4. All great ideas and look great. Australian birds would need bigger houses though.

Ah painting and staining. My favourite jobs to ignore.

  5. Love your bird houses Cat... hanging them together is a good idea but not sure how the birds will like being that close to their neighbors. Sweet clay birds . . . great photos! So who is having a birthday. If you . . . Happy Almost! ;>)

  6. I was thinking the same thing Carol but at this point the houses have been in the yard for a couple of years and no takers...they are decorative now!

We're going to be celebrating my daughter's 18th! Hard to believe but she assures me she is grown up now :-)

  8. I'm collecting birdhouses for my fence as well as some that are purely decor for a plant rack inside the house. I love the way you have yours on the trellis. And I bet the birds will love it,too!
