I'm Lovin' This!

These are the current temperatures in the Austin area right now!  It's 12:42 pm.  Wooohooo!  The front blew through yesterday afternoon and the temperature dropped 20 degrees within an hour...91-71 degrees.

We haven't received any rain as of yet but there is a 40% chance and the skies are threatening.  I'm rain-dancing as I type!  Maybe my I'm Not Lovin' This... post was effective somehow.  (Yeah, right!)

I took a chance Saturday and transplanted this Shasta daisy.  This weather is a God send and has allowed the daisy to acclimate.  It's looking good so far...no wilt.  White Tropical sage is planted in the left foreground and mint is potted in the pink clay pot to the rear.

The pineapple sage is a bit confused...blooming in April/May.  I'm not complaining as it's a hummingbird and butterfly magnet but it is weird to look to that corner of the garden and see it blooming.   The small tree in the background is Japanese yew and in the clay pot, another variety of mint.

A quick glimpse through the Mexican feather grass reveals a couple daylilies peeking through.  One early riser on the Black-eyed Susan stands tall and to the right, Senorita Rosalita cleome adds a bright splash of color.  Behind the Senorita Rosalita is more Black-eyed Susan and a clump of red flowering Canna lily.  Virginia creeper climbs the fence in the background.  Tucked behind the feather grass, and in front of the Mediterranean palm is a dwarf Mexican firebush.   The struggling plant between the Black-eyed Susan and Senorita is a Gulf Coast penstemon that my dog is fond of marking...I just cut it back as I don't really have much room for any volunteers from the seeds.  At this point, I'm hoping this one survives.

I'm enjoying this day so much - it's like a winter day with blooms!

  1. We've had that weather for almost three weeks. It's been ok, however I have a tendency to want a little warmer weather. I am sure we will go straight into summer after all this, so I have mixed blessings. We had about a week of abnormal highs around the first of April which brought on a lot of spring growth and color. The cool weather then kept the color and slowed down the growth so it is good. Reminds me of how flowers hold on longer in cooler climates such as early summers in colorado and the Midwest.

  2. Beautiful pictures -- I don't know how you all can live where it's so hot -- it's in the mid-70's today, and that's too hot for me (I know, I'm a weather wimp).

  3. Although I'm glad all of you Texas gardeners have a reprieve from the heat (and maybe drought), that cold front means that tomorrow night in St. Louis we may get frost. FROST! IN MAY! I think they're wrong about that, but we'll see.

  4. Glad you are making the most of the break from the heat! Ah heat, what is that again? we are in the 40's here still, last month we had 7 days of sun. Kinda waiting for spring to arrive still, so making do with what we have! Beautiful pics as always Cat, your shasta looks so healthy and happy =)

  5. So exciting to have a Portland-type day when I'd already resigned myself to summer! I'm rain dancing right there with you, for this to keep on going a bit longer. That shot of the coral yucca is lovely.

  8. Glad you're getting a break from the heat! It always disturbs me when summer seems to come too soon - makes me think of climate change.

I love that photo of the coral yucca! Not a plant I'm familiar with.

  9. The weather has been atypical all over this year. Lucky you are getting the best of the weather and not the worse. Here the temps are dropping a bit too, but it is excellent gardening weather. We are getting much rain, but will get sun later this week. I am glad your weather is making your garden grow so well as everything looks lush and green.

  10. Ha! Those 40s and 50s temps are what we'd consider a really pleasant day in New England in spring. That's why I love to read blogs, to get the range of atmospheres and how gardens look in different seasons than my own. Yours is lovely right now.

  16. We are hitting highs in the 90's right now. Definitely summer. Did your rain dance work? Maybe I should give it a try too. Your plants seem none the worse for wear, so lovely in fact.

  19. Beautiful garden and beautiful photos!!! First time here. Oh what I have been missing. I too have been enjoying this weather- not sure how long it will last but enjoying every moment of it. Love the combo of the daylilies and the feather grass. Little pop of color.
    Nice blog!

  20. If I remember the radar right, you got some rain out that "cold" front coming in from NW. If so, lucky you! :)
We still haven't seen any rain here in Spring, TX. It is as dry as it can be and way too hot for the time of the year. Also this daily wind of 15-20+ mph is really unusual for our area.
Btw, my hibiscus did make it. All the lice are gone, hibiscus got lots of new leaves and is blooming as nice it can be.
    Best Regards
