Might I Have Owl on the Brain? What Do You See?

Eastern screech owls are all I can think of.  We experience a rush of exhilaration every time we see them.  A cute, little face appears at the box opening each evening as the sun slips below the horizon.  With the porch light on we can see the opening of the box clearly but I hate to disturb them with the light.  Last night we watched the male swoop in from the greenbelt through the tree canopy with a nice sized morsel for his mate!

We don't however, get any photographs.  A couple of friends with owl boxes have captured photos of their resident owls during the day.  Admittedly, I haven't been home much during the past week so maybe they are coming to the opening in the daylight hours and I just haven't seen them.  I hope so.

How long, I wonder, will I be seeing owls in everything I come across...like this old water pump handle fitting...

What do you see in the picture above?  Do you see the owl?

{This image was taken in March at night.  The box is clearly visible from my son's room with the porch light on...but I am seriously hoping to get some shots of them during the day.}

  2. I do see the owl (probably because you said it ;-)
But it could also be a cute little robot face that is gonna blink any second.

  7. Love the shot of the owl in the box. He or she is so cute! We have Barred and Great Horned Owls here but no Screen Owls.

  8. Lucky you, having Owls. I have'nt seen or heard an Owl in years. The last Owl I saw was at the vets. They were treating one that had been hit by a car. Beautiful creatures!

  11. Wow...I hear owls occasionally, but I guess to see them I need to get on the bandwagon and build a box like you, Jenny, Pam, etc. Not sure which owl it is we have.

  13. Good luck on your quest to get more photos. I can understand your obsession. How fun to get to see them - and how nice of the male to bring food to his mate.

  17. I looked up at the box yesterday morning but couldn't see him but D told me it was there later in the day. I think it is just roosting there. Wouldn't you just like to open that little latch and take a look!

  18. Jenny, I'm dying to take a look! When my kids were little they had a science teacher that ordered owl pellets and they rummaged through them and found all kinds of little bones from things the owls had eaten. It was fascinating. I was teasing my son that we should dig around in there when they move out to see what we can find.

  19. I have never done an owl house- we had a bat house in Houston but never an owl. I would sit up all hours trying to get photos hahaha. Great shot by the way- can't wait to see more!!!

  20. Last May, after our owl family left and the bees invaded, the bee keeper had to break the house open to get the bees out. All that was in the house was the saw dust we put in, some twigs and leaves and feathers. I'd seen the feathers all over the yard and didn't realize they were owl feathers. The feathers are a nondescript gray/brown with a tiny yellow tip. We've never seen any pellets of any sort. Screech owls are neat eaters, it seems.

  21. Cute! We have owls in our backyard, too. I think Great Horned and some other breeds. Once my husband heard an owl making lots of noises through the fireplace flu--so the bird must have been perching on top of the chimney. The next morning we found a lone rabbit's foot on the picnic table!

  22. Tina and PlantPostings, thanks for sharing your experiences...fascinating. Tina, I'll be on the lookout for the feathers. I'm not sure what type of owls the pellets came from. Your description of the inside of the box is really interesting. My husband and I were wondering how funky it might be in there with two adults and owlets inhabiting such a small space!

  23. I think only Mom is there now, with the eggs. Once the owlets grow, she'll be in a nearby tree. In the week r so before the owlets finally leave the box, (mid-Mayish), you'll catch glimpses of them--cute little faces and flashes of feathers. Oh, they are the cutest things!!

  26. Hi Cat! I hear the owls around my house all the time but have only been fortunate to have seen one once. They are probably one of my favorite birds, too. Love the shot of the one in your box! Beautiful :) Lucky you!

  27. Cat, Owls are fascinating! No wonder you are seeing them in everything. Are their baby owls in the nest box yet I wonder?
