She'll Be Back

Ah!  Look!  A butterfly!

These words drifted through the window and pulled me from the comfort of my chair.   A small girl excited by the sight of a butterfly stood open mouthed; transfixed by the acrobatic, graceful movements.  And I too stood transfixed, marveling at this small child's delight in her simple discovery.

She gets it, I thought to myself.  She really gets it.  A smile opened itself wide on both our faces as we shared the moment.  She reluctantly trailed after her companion and I wanted to yell, wait, wait ... you haven't seen the hummingbirds yet or the many lizards or the swallowtails.  But I think she knows.  She'll be back.

Joy was written all over her face.

No one can not admire a beautiful butterfly and having a not so great photo. Yours.

  3. I remember when you added the butterfly plants to the front and how sweet you can share these special moments of wonder with those who take time to see.

  6. There are two real and present dangers I face in my work in the garden beds. First up is that I will begin to think of them truly as "mine" when they are all shared spaces in every sense of that word. Second is that I will somehow see it all as work done plus work to be done and lose the joy.

A sincere thank-you for reminding me that it is joy experienced and joy shared the natural world has to offer us.

  11. Those moments are the best. Thanks for sharing that magical encounter, Cat. And by the way--I love the way you captured the stillness of the butterfly's body with the motion of the wings. Beautiful!

  12. What a pure moment. It's made even better that it happened with a real butterfly instead of a video screen. :o)
