Spring Gratitude ~ Kitchen Window Blessings

The view from my kitchen window on a quiet, rainy Friday brought unexpected blessing.

Even during steady rainfall a bird has to eat...

The coffee root sculpture proves to be the perfect spot to perch while awaiting a turn at the feeder.

This is a first.  These finches usually prefer the sanctuary of the native persimmon tree across the yard but today there is no shelter from the rain in the bare-branched tree.  Nestled under the eave of the garage, the coffee root is nice and dry.

Interesting.  I never know what is going to become a favorite of the wildlife that visits my garden.  I'm happy they like this little piece of whimsy as much as I do.

The columbine Aquilegia chrysantha is soaking in this gentle, welcome rain.   Suddenly, doing the dishes isn't such a chore...

I love spring.

  5. I just finished reading Our Life in Gardens (Eck & Winterrowd), and they talk about fighting over who would get to do the washing up after lunch, because the view out the kitchen window was so beautiful. Your view is a delight!

  7. Oh that coffee root sculpture is right up my alley! I understand why the birds love it. Your columbine are so lovely! Mine haven't started blooming yet...a few more weeks to go! I am so glad you are enjoying so many spring blooms...it just took a little rain to bring them out!

  8. I was watching the finches today, too, a nice break from chores! But now I need to get them a cute perch like yours. Just precious. What a totally wonderful day. Thank you for capturing it.

  9. I love finches. :o) We have a lot of them. They are such clowns. I love how unpredictable wildlife is. I once had a bird hop onto my rain barrel and drink from the rain downspout like it was a faucet. Very funny to watch. Beautiful columbine!

  18. Love those birds. And, the Columbine. I had lots of it, in my old garden. Haven't gotten it to grow here, but I won't give up.
    Hope you're enjoying this rain.

  20. How fun!! I'm sure when you got your sculpture the last thing you thought about is that it would be a bird perch :-) Multitasking yard art! Looks like your columbines are a few weeks ahead of mine. Is that an oak leaf hydrangea behind? I have the same combo in my garden with a few Turk's cap in between. Enjoy the rain!! It is so wonderful. I saw in our paper the other day that the DFW area is officially out of drought status at this point, but I know it could change in a heartbeat this summer.

  21. Hi Cat ! Would you share where you got your root face ? Myself and a friend have lusted for these after seeing them in New Mexico, but they wanted an arm, a leg, AND a firstborn ! Did you find them somewhere closer ? I'm surprised your columbines are so lush with blooms already. I'm just west of San Antonio and mine have just started. Glad to see you enjoy Rock-Oak-Deer's blog -- she's a sweet garden pal ! And... we're having a plant swap in Manchaca next month if you're interested. Email me, if so.

  22. Welcome PJ Girl! So glad you enjoyed your visit here!

@Toni, you're absolutely right; I never imagined the birds would perch there! And yes, that is an oak leaf hydrangea...good eyes. There is also heart leaf skull cap, cast iron, and a dwarf beautyberry nearby. This is the first full season for the hydrangea and I'm really hopeful that it will be happy here- especially with the rain of late. We are still in drought...Lake Travis was about 37% full before the rain this weekend. Hopeful that we'll keep adding to the totals. We've been praying that God will take it back up to 681!

  25. Ah, they are so sweet! What great views you have out to where 'flora and fauna' live! (Your yard art is like a "party place" for finches - how cool is that?)

  26. Look at all of them lined up and waiting to get to the feeder. They are getting their bright yellow colors now too just like you Columbines. How pretty Cat.

  27. Love the yard art - and how sweet that the finches decided to hang out there to keep out of the rain. Very sweet!

  29. How cute! These are precious sites. Sites I cherish in my own garden. I often feel honored and blessed that they find my garden a place to eat, sleep, nest, and visit.
